Rock of Ages, the name given to this view, refers to a rock formation at Niagara Falls, New York, where the river drops toward the cataract. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a large format that the Detroit Publishing Company used for its landscape work in the early twentieth century. Niagara was one of the most photographed places in the country, and the company produced views like this for a growing market of tourists and publishers. The negative is dated between 1905 and 1915, a decade when the falls drew steady crowds of sightseers by rail and steamboat.
