Few pictures on this board show the American Fall with the rock outcrop called Rock of Ages beside it, which makes this view of Niagara Falls on the New York side distinctive. The Detroit Publishing Company made it around 1898 using the photochrom process, which turned a black-and-white photograph into a color print by layering several hand-prepared lithographic stones. The company produced the image to build a catalog of its views, and the album it appears in was kept in its office as a reference. Its soft, saturated tones show how the firm marketed Niagara and other American scenery to travelers in the years before color photography became common.
