This view was taken on the brink of the American Falls, the smaller of the two cataracts that make up Niagara on the New York side of the river. It survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced travel views of popular sites for sale to tourists and publishers in the early 1900s. Niagara was then one of the most visited natural wonders in North America, and plates like this one show how close visitors could still come to the rim. The Library of Congress holds it through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
