Few stretches of the Niagara River look as turbulent as the Whirlpool Rapids, where the water, having tumbled over the falls and through the gorge, is forced into a sharp bend. Two glass negatives, joined side by side, capture the full width of the scene, with the Michigan Central Cantilever Bridge and the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge spanning the gorge in the background. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold scenic views to tourists and publishers in the early twentieth century, made the pair. Together the bridges show how rail and road crossings were built directly over the gorge, so the view records engineering as much as scenery.
