The rapids pictured here lie on the Niagara River above the falls, where the river runs fast and white over rock on the border between New York and Ontario. The glass negative, 8 by 10 inches, is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views from roughly 1900 to 1910, when the firm was documenting American scenery and tourist sites for sale as photographic prints. Catalogued as number 032987, it shows the river's rough water before its drop, a stretch of the gorge that drew steady crowds of visitors and was a favorite subject for photographers of the period.
