A campaign banner bearing the name of John W. Kern stretches over Falls Street in Niagara Falls, New York, placing this scene in the 1908 election season. Kern was the Democratic nominee for vice president that year, running with William Jennings Bryan, and the record's note on "regular Democratic nominations" points to the party's official ticket. The view dates to about 1908 and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns and streets. Look at the storefronts and street traffic, which show the commercial life of a city known mainly for the falls nearby.
