Taken from Prospect Point, the lookout on the American side of the gorge, this view shows the falls from a spot that drew sightseers throughout the late nineteenth century. The image survives as a 5 x 8 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that had largely replaced wet collodion plates by the 1880s and let photographers work with less equipment in the field. The catalog attribution to William Henry Jackson, a well-known landscape photographer whose negatives later passed to the Detroit Publishing Company, places it within a broader effort to document American scenery for travelers and collectors. Niagara, which straddles the border with Canada, was among the most photographed natural sites of its day.
