Taken from Prospect Point on the American side, this view of the falls was made on a large glass dry plate negative, about 14 by 11 inches, a format that gave photographers of the period exceptional sharpness and detail. The Detroit Publishing Company produced and sold views like this one in great numbers in the years before 1920, when travel by rail had made Niagara one of the most visited sites in North America. The negative's markings also show how such plates were catalogued and later preserved, having reached the Library of Congress after a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
