Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac from Washington, is the setting for this view of members of the Daughters of the Confederacy, a women's organization that tended Confederate graves and memorials there in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed Washington and its surroundings during the 1910s and 1920s, made the exposure on glass, and its caption is partly rubbed away, so the full occasion is not recorded. Viewers may notice faint streaks and blemishes across the plate, which come from the coatings breaking down over time, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
