The Apthorpe Apartments stood at the corner of Broadway and 78th Street, on the Upper West Side, a stretch of Manhattan that was being rebuilt in the early 1900s as the elevator apartment house replaced older rowhouses and country estates. The print's copyright notation, H124387, shows that it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, so it was made to be published or sold as a view of the building. It captures a moment when apartment living was becoming the standard for middle- and upper-class New Yorkers, and its street-level view offers a useful record of the neighborhood's streetscape around 1909.
