Electric streetcars crowd the streets beside Boston Common, the city's oldest public park, in this view from around 1897. Boston had converted much of its horse-drawn street railway to electric traction in the early 1890s, and the trolley network that grew from that change made the downtown edge of the Common one of the busiest transfer points in the city. The photograph was registered for copyright around the same time, which is why the Library of Congress dates it to the late 1890s and files it among its prints from that decade. Look closely at the overhead wires and the tracks, which show how the new electric system reshaped the street.
