Boston Common, the oldest public park in the United States, was set aside by the town's settlers in 1634 and has served as a pasture, militia training ground and gathering place ever since. By 1897 it lay alongside the Public Garden, a landscaped park laid out on filled marshland in the 1860s, so the two together formed a green belt at the edge of downtown. The Public Garden's swan boats, which began carrying riders in 1877, were already a local attraction. Views of the Common from these years often show the mix of carriages, streetcars and strolling families that made the area a daily center of city life.
