Few buildings in America carry as much revolutionary lore as the steeple of Christ Church in Boston's North End, better known as Old North Church. Its tower is the one from which two lanterns were hung on the night of April 18, 1775, a signal to the Patriots across the river in Charlestown that British troops were moving out of the city. This c1918 photograph records the church as it stood in the early twentieth century, when the building was already a shrine to that night's events and drew visitors from across the country. The church was completed in 1723, which makes it one of the oldest standing churches in the city.
