From the harbor, the view takes in Faneuil Hall, the market building and public meeting place that Bostonians called the "Cradle of Liberty" because of its role in colonial-era protests. Steamboats and sailing ships crowd the waterfront in the foreground, a reminder of how central the port was to the city's trade in the 1850s. The engraving appeared in *Gleason's Pictorial*, a Boston illustrated weekly that brought scenes of local and national life to a wide readership. Its close attention to the working waterfront makes it useful for seeing how the city looked from the water just before the Civil War.
