Boys picking through refuse at a South Boston dump form the subject of this October 1909 view, taken at a site the caption notes was being filled in to become a playground. The photograph is attributed to Lewis Hine, who documented young workers and urban poverty for the National Child Labor Committee in the early 1900s. Scavenging among city refuse was a common way for poor children to find items to sell or reuse, and the image shows how such work fit into the daily life of working-class neighborhoods. The shift from dumps to playgrounds also reflects the reform-minded public health efforts of the period.
