Boys, a man, and horses gather at a Boston market in October 1909, a scene that places this print among the street trades pictures Lewis Hine made for the National Child Labor Committee. The caption card that came with it supplies the title, and the attribution to Hine rests on the print's provenance, including its place in an album labeled "Street trades." Hine's work for the committee used images like this to show young boys peddling goods on city streets, at a time when child labor laws were weak and uneven. Notice how the horses and the vendors share the frame, a sign of how much city commerce depended on animal power.
