A boy hanging onto the back of a cart, with a man nearby, sets this Boston view apart from the other street scenes on the board. The record dates it to October 1909 and attributes it to Lewis Hine, who was then photographing working children for the National Child Labor Committee. The title comes from the committee's caption card and reads as a plea, the kind of request a boy might make to a driver for a free ride. Hine's street photographs from these years often show young workers among adults and horse-drawn traffic, which makes them useful records of everyday city labor.
