Boys at work in a Boston market in October 1909 set this print apart from the other market scenes on the board, and they place it among the street-trade studies Lewis Hine made for the National Child Labor Committee. Hine traveled widely to document young workers, and his photographs of children selling goods and taking odd jobs in city streets helped build public support for child labor laws. The title comes from the caption card that accompanied the print, and the attribution to Hine rests on its provenance rather than on a signature. The image is worth studying for how it shows children's labor woven into everyday urban commerce.
