Taken late at night in Boston in October 1909, this view of a market is set apart from most of the street scenes on this board by its hour, with carts, wagons, and vending stands gathered in the dark. Lewis Hine made it on a glass negative while working for the National Child Labor Committee, which employed him to document young workers in street trades such as peddling and market selling. The print's album title, *Street Trades*, places it within that project. The attribution to Hine rests on the collection's provenance rather than a signature, so the picture is best read as part of his wider record of how working life in American cities was organized in the early twentieth century.
