Few pictures from the Dust Bowl show family and weather so plainly: a farmer and his sons walk into a wall of blowing soil in Cimarron County, in the Oklahoma panhandle, in April 1936. The county sat in the heart of the drought-stricken southern plains, where years of dry weather and plowed-up grassland left topsoil loose enough for winds to lift it into huge dark clouds. The negative was later transferred to the Office of War Information's Overseas Picture Division in 1944, and the image was published in the Library of Congress's *Eyes of the Nation* history. Its stark composition, with the figures bent forward against the sky, has made it a familiar picture of rural hardship in the 1930s.
