Cody appears here as a scout on horseback, a figure who blended frontier service with the showmanship that made him famous. The color lithograph carries the name of Paul Frenzeny, an illustrator known for his Western scenes in magazines such as *Harper's Weekly*, and the Forbes Company of Boston and New York published it. Cody had already become a national celebrity through dime novels and his work as an Army scout on the Plains, and his later Wild West shows would build on that image. The print's undated range, placed between 1872 and 1890, reflects that period of rising fame.
