Few people in 1870 would have recognized the name on this color lithograph as anything beyond a frontier scout's, but the print already presents William F. Cody as a figure worth a portrait. Its imprint credits Monsch Bros. of Cincinnati, Ohio, a city that was a busy center of American lithography in the nineteenth century, and the notice "Copyright by W.O. Potter" shows the design was registered under the artist's name. Cody's fame grew rapidly after dime novels by Ned Buntline began appearing in 1869, and stage appearances and later his Wild West show made him one of the country's best-known figures. Printed portraits like this one helped spread that reputation to buyers far from the plains.
