Few pictures show the Wild West show away from the American plains quite like this group portrait, made during the company's crossing from New York to London. Photographer Merritt Van Wagner produced this albumen print on a card mount around 1887, when the troupe was bound for England. The voyage was tied to the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria that year, when Buffalo Bill's show drew large crowds in London. The image records a moment when the show's American spectacle was carried overseas, and it remains a useful document of how the company presented itself to the public.
