Titled *Buffalo Hunt in the Wild West*, this chromolithograph dates to about 1897 and shows American Indians pursuing bison as a means of subsistence on the Plains. It was issued by Muller, Luchsinger & Co. of New York, a firm that produced inexpensive color prints for a broad popular market. By the 1890s, decades of commercial hunting had reduced the great bison herds to a small fraction of their former size, so the scene looks back on a way of life already vanishing. Its bright colors and dramatic action reflect how eagerly audiences of the period consumed images of the frontier as a memory.
