Bucker is a color lithograph made as a tobacco package label, and its title names the wild horse at the center of the scene. Around 1887, tobacco makers used bright pictures like this to catch buyers' eyes, and Western subjects of cowboys and untamed broncos were popular because the cattle frontier held a strong place in the public imagination. The label was printed by Schumacher & Ettlinger of New York, a lithography firm, and it carries a U.S. copyright notice, which shows that commercial color prints of this kind were treated as protected works of art.
