Warships of the North Atlantic Squadron lie at anchor off Philadelphia in this view, timed to the 1899 national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, the fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans. The city hosted large veterans' gatherings like this one, and naval displays drew crowds to the waterfront during such events. The catalog record lists the squadron under the name "Squadron of Evolution," the term for the fleet's formation drills. The image is a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and places around the turn of the century.
