A bird's-eye view looks down the length of North Broad Street, one of the main north-south thoroughfares in Philadelphia, which William Penn's 1682 plan laid out as a wide avenue running from the Delaware River toward the Schuylkill. Around 1911 the city's northern blocks were filling with office buildings, churches, and rows of brick houses, and the street was becoming a showcase for the city's growth. Aerial-style photographs like this one were uncommon at the time, so the image offers a rare view of how the street's width, traffic, and built-up blocks fit together.
