Street views from 1842 are relatively uncommon, so this daguerreotype of shops and carriages on a city thoroughfare offers a rare glimpse of everyday commerce. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each a single unique image that had to be tilted to show its positive tones. Exposures in that period often ran for several minutes, so moving traffic usually left no trace, and any carriage that appears was likely standing still long enough to register. Such details reveal much about street life only a few years after the process was announced in 1839.
