Mulberry Street, in lower Manhattan, was the heart of the city's Italian immigrant community around 1900, and this color photochrom shows the street's crowded commerce at close range. Photochrom was a costly process that hand-colored and layered tinted lithographic plates over a photographic base, and the Detroit Photographic Company used it to produce views of American cities and scenery for sale. The subjects listed in the record, peddlers and markets, point to the street's open-air trade, which drew customers from the surrounding tenements. The print also served as a catalog item in the company's own office, so it reflects what the firm chose to sell as much as what the street looked like.
