An exhibition announcement printed in silkscreen, color, promotes 110 photographs by project photographers at the WPA Federal Art Gallery on East 38th Street in New York City, running May 12 to June 9, probably in 1936 or 1937. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed artists during the Depression, and its New York workshops used screen printing to make bold, inexpensive posters for exhibitions and public events. Its inclusion of cameras among the subjects reflects the program's interest in photography as a serious art form, at a time when many museums were still reluctant to show it.
