Street views from the earliest years of photography are rare, and this sixth-plate daguerreotype of the corner of Eighth and Market streets in Philadelphia is one of them. Exposures in 1840 ran for minutes, so moving carts and passing pedestrians would have left little or no trace, and the busy commercial crossing appears nearly empty. The plate's paper seal and yellow label name R. Cornelius, a Philadelphia daguerreotypist then working on Eighth Street above Chestnut, and a handwritten seal bears the name of the firm McAllister & Co., of 48 Chestnut Street.
