A whole-plate daguerreotype shows two neighboring buildings, Nos. 46 and 48 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, dated December 12, 1854. The label on the back says it was made by a Mr. Richards and given to James Cook McAllister, and it notes that the view was taken from a second-story western window. Chestnut Street was one of Philadelphia's main commercial thoroughfares in the 1850s, so the plate records a busy street of shops and offices at a time when photography was still new. As with all daguerreotypes, the image is a single unique positive on silvered copper, and its mirror-like surface shows its detail best when viewed at an angle.
