Mason's daguerreotype shows a row of shops on the south side of Chestnut Street, west of Second Street, in Philadelphia. Legible signs include Walking Canes, McAllister & Son, and W.G. Mason, Engraver, and a paper label on the back notes that the store at No. 48 was photographed just before a new window was installed in 1843. Mason gave the plate to John McAllister Jr. on June 17, 1843. Because exposures of that period ran for minutes, passing carriages and pedestrians left no trace, so the street looks empty and still.
