A street scene captured in 1842 is among the earliest surviving kinds of photographic record, since exposures of that era needed minutes of stillness and so moving traffic usually vanished from the plate. Here the brick buildings and a horse cart stand fixed in silvery detail, the cart's presence telling us that something was in motion even if the image cannot show it. Daguerreotypes like this were made on polished silver-coated copper, which gives them a mirror-like surface that shifts with the viewer's angle. Worth noticing is how the long exposure rendered the street as an empty, orderly place, a quality that makes these early views feel both precise and strangely quiet.
