A horse and covered cart stand before a white frame building in Thompson, Connecticut, where signs advertise the County House, J. Griggs, and L.J. Phillips's Daguerrian Rooms. The cloth sign suggests Phillips may have been an itinerant daguerreotypist, moving from town to town to make portraits in the mid-1850s. Daguerreotypes like this sixth-plate example, a small silvered copper plate sealed behind glass in a decorative case, were the dominant form of photography at the time, and the long exposures needed to fix a scene make outdoor views with carts and signs especially worth a closer look.
