A white frame house behind a white picket fence in Cambridge, New York, stands in this quarter-plate daguerreotype with a horse and buggy waiting out front. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on polished silver-coated copper plates and sealed behind glass in a small case, so each image is a single positive that cannot be copied the way later negatives could. This example dates to roughly 1840 to 1860, a period when the daguerreotype was the most common form of photography in the United States. The record notes that the original case is fitted with a mirror so the viewer sees the house the right way round, and the carriage in front offers a glimpse of everyday rural travel before the railroad reshaped the region.
