Chestnut and Strawberry Alley in Philadelphia, a corner house at the center of this daguerreotype, is recorded in the title etched into the plate itself, which dates to about 1845. The image is a small sixth-plate silver plate, a mirror-bright surface that shows its picture only when tilted toward the light. Its case bears a scene of the Burns Monument in Ayr, Scotland, honoring the poet Robert Burns, and a label names W.Y. McAllister as the maker. The Library of Congress acquired the piece in 1999 as part of the Marion S. Carson collection.
