Looking north up Broad Street from Locust Street, this view is anchored by two landmarks named in the record: the Bellevue-Stratford hotel on the left and Philadelphia's City Hall rising in the background. The Bellevue-Stratford, which opened in 1904 at the corner of Broad and Walnut, was among the city's most fashionable hotels, and its presence in the frame places the scene in the early 1900s, when Broad Street was becoming the grand northern boulevard of the city. Made as a glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, the picture reflects the firm's broad project of documenting American cities and landscapes in color-ready detail for commercial sale.
