Looking north up Broad Street from Locust Street, this view runs toward City Hall at the avenue's far end, the civic landmark that the subject tags point to. Penn's original plan laid out Broad as one of Philadelphia's widest north-south streets, and by the early 1900s its blocks held offices, shops, and commercial buildings. The Detroit Publishing Company made this large-format glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1910, when the firm was documenting American cities and street life just as automobiles were beginning to appear. The scene is worth studying for its street, its buildings, and the way the city moved and did business in those years.
