This view looks north up Broad Street from Spruce Street, with City Hall at the far end of the avenue. The building was still rising in these years. Construction began in 1871 and was not finished until 1901, and its tower was crowned by the statue of William Penn, placed in 1894. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-scale views of American streets and landmarks around the turn of the century. Its record notes that the State Historical Society of Colorado gave it to the Library of Congress in 1949.
