Looking south from City Hall, this view runs down Broad Street, the long north-south avenue that Philadelphia laid out as its grand thoroughfare. City Hall, finished in 1901 after nearly three decades of construction, anchors the scene at Penn Square, where a statue of William Penn stands atop the tower. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and scenery for commercial sale in the early twentieth century. Its storefronts and street traffic show a busy downtown of the period.
