Two office buildings, the North American and the Real Estate Trust, stand together in this view of Philadelphia, with the Garrick theater visible at the right edge. Their tall, densely windowed facades show how the city's commercial core was reaching upward in the years around 1900, when steel framing and passenger elevators made office towers practical. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American cities and landmarks, often for promotional use. Its large glass negative, which captures fine detail in the street and cornices, offers a useful record of the downtown streetscape at the turn of the century.
