Visible on the building to the left is a sign reading "Morris Building," which places the scene on a busy Philadelphia street where commercial blocks stood shoulder to shoulder. The Girard Trust Company, named for the merchant and banker Stephen Girard, was one of the city's major financial institutions, and its presence on the street reflects Philadelphia's long standing as a center of banking and insurance. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its extensive photographic survey of American towns, cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century. Its 8-by-10-inch format gave the photographer fine detail in the stone façades, signs and street life.
