Few Philadelphia neighborhoods carry as deep a German heritage as Germantown, settled in 1683 by German immigrants, and this view of the men's building of the Manheim Club shows one of the social institutions that grew up there. The image survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made around 1908 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its broad photographic survey of American cities, scenery and architecture in the early twentieth century. Clubhouses of this kind often served as gathering places for men of a neighborhood, offering rooms for meetings, dining and fellowship outside the home and workplace.
