Few sights in turn-of-the-century Philadelphia matched a warship taking shape on the stocks at William Cramp & Sons, the company's yard on the Delaware River. Cramp was one of the leading American shipbuilders of its day, and the period between 1900 and 1910 was a busy one for the U.S. Navy, which was steadily expanding its fleet. Photographs like this one, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, record the scale of hull framing and the labor of riveting and fitting that went into such vessels before launch.
