Here the camera turns to the piers and yards of William Cramp & Sons, one of the great shipbuilders on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. The firm built both warships and ocean liners, and its docks were a major source of work and jobs along the river's industrial waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around the turn of the 20th century, made views like this one as commercial records of American cities and industry. The glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1906, a period when the shipyards were busy and steam-era ships were reshaping American maritime trade.
