Rather than a natural landmark alone, this view centers on a carved figure of Tedyuscung, the Lenape leader (about 1700 to 1763) who worked to keep peace between Native nations and Pennsylvania's colonial government, and who is commemorated at this rocky spot in Fairmount Park. Made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American scenery and cities, the photograph shows how the park presented its history to visitors in the early twentieth century. The large glass plate negative preserves fine detail in the rock and the figure.
