Sheep grazing on the open grass of Fairmount Park set this scene apart from the carriages and promenades that usually fill views of the city. The park, laid out along the Schuylkill River and established by the city in 1855, was among the largest urban parks in the country, and its meadows served both leisure and practical uses. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1890 and 1924 produced large numbers of photographs and color prints of American places for travelers and publishers. The glass negatives, dated here between 1900 and 1910, record how one green corner of Philadelphia looked in the early twentieth century.
