The Wissahickon Creek, a wooded stream that runs through Fairmount Park in northwest Philadelphia, is the subject here, shown as a quiet riverside scene rather than a city street. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s and was known for color and black-and-white views of American landscapes and towns, made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1915. The Wissahickon gorge was valued by Philadelphians as a retreat close to the city, and the park's creek and footpaths drew walkers, riders and picnickers well before the photograph was taken.
