Winding along the Schuylkill River inside Fairmount Park, this view shows one of the scenic drives that made the park a favorite outing for Philadelphians. The park was created in the 1850s and laid out with carriage roads that let visitors take in the river and its wooded banks without leaving their seats. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American places in the years before 1915 and sold the views as travel souvenirs. It is now held in the Library of Congress collection.
